Book Recommendations

I am indebted to the work of these authors.  Their words guide my own journey and I reference them often in the Sacred Misfit blog.

Please read, important:

If you click through the link and buy the book, you not only get must-have material for your Misfit library, but you also support my work here through an affiliate program.

When you do that, it is huge.

When you purchase the books through these links, or buy healthy pet products from Life’s Abundance, you make it possible for me to spend more time writing Misfit material and less time writing inane copy on topics that I care nothing about.

Like downrigger copy.  Please save me from having to write about downriggers.

Thank you.

The Gifts of Imperfection has been indispensable in my journey.  Every Sacred Misfit needs to hear Brene Brown's healing words.  Through this book, I learned how to lead a more wholehearted, authentic and compassionate life.  In short, you will laugh and cry and never be the same.  You can find Brene on Tedtalks and on her own blog, Ordinary Courage.

When the Heart Waits saved me when I was in a crisis.  Kidd beautifully captures what it means to be in a time of waiting, when you neither can go forward nor go back, and the holiness that is found there.  Through this book, I was able to identify labels that had been slapped on my soul and were obscuring who I was meant to be.  This book is crying out to be on every Sacred Misfit's shelf, a ready reference for inspiration and direction.

The Mindful path to Self-Compassion is eye-opening.  This book is filled with mind-blowing insight into the human brain and exercises to help you develop greater self-compassion.  I often remember the verse - 'Love your neighbor as yourself" - in order to love others, I must love myself first.  Yet another author whose ground-breaking work has truly freed me and so many others.

Price:  $9.99
In Half the church James has been able to reveal so much about the question, 'Is God for Women?' in the book.  I strongly, deeply recommend it for any woman who has had the same question, or any man for the matter that would like to know more of what God says about women, His image bearers and ezer warriors.

Unthinking gave me a surprising look into the psychology of Americans:  what we love, what we buy, why we buy and how to touch our deepest emotions.  People don't buy things, they buy emotions and feelings - and this book showed me what those needs were.  Beckwith uses surprising stories to illustrate his points, and I was never bored.  If you are going to sell your stuff to Americans, this book is a must-have.

Price: $14.99
As you can tell, I like this Beckwith guy.  You, Inc. is about so much more than marketing.  It is about finding your weaknesses and no longer being afraid of them.  It is about great communication and improving the way you present yourself.  What I really like is that this is not autobiographic (you know, where you read all about someone else's success and expect that will help you).  The chapters are short - which is great for people (like me) who don't have much time or attention.

Harry also has a blog.

Book Yourself Solid is a great investment.  It is a whole system. If you follow his suggestions and do the exercises, your business will thrive - and you may find yourself with too much business.  I have learned so much from this book.

Ok seriously, if you have read this book can I get a holler?  I saw these guys in Chicago 4 years ago and they are still making waves.  Funny, memorable, jam packed with ideas on how to make your brand and your ideas stick - Chip and Dan Heath rock it out in Made To Stick.  The Washington Post says it best:  Anyone interested in influencing others -- to buy, to vote, to learn, to diet, to give to charity or to start a revolution - can learn from this book.

Price: $9.99
So, if I have to be honest, Rich Dad, Poor Dad was the book that started it all.  If you read nothing else in this business section, read this.  It is a short book that will open your eyes to a whole new way of looking at money and business.
